My dear friends,
Many of you know that my wonderful Nick died suddenly on Sunday, July 1, 2007. I am posting his obituary below. Scrapbooks By The Sea will remain in The Village shops and will continue to operate with our regular hours and class schedule. I will be sending out information on all of our retreats for the year in the next couple of weeks. Please pray extra hard for me. If you have any questions, please call or email me.

Dennis “Nick” Allen Nickell
Nick, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, was born on March 13, 1948. He was called home suddenly on July 1, 2007. Funeral Services will be held by Rev. Don Williams on Sunday, July 8, 2007 at 2:00 at The Goldfinch, Pawleys Island Chapel. Visitation will be held at The Pawleys Island Goldfinch Funeral Home on Saturday, July 7, 2007 from 6:00 until 8:00. Casual wear is welcome. Flip Flops and shorts are perfect. Nick's parents, Hershell and Ann Nickell were waiting to welcome him on the other shore. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Kim of the home, his two cherished sons, Adam Nickell of Phoenix, Arizona and Sgt. Nathan Nickell, his wife Angie and Nick's precious granddaughter Erin of Valdosta, Georgia. Nick also had a sister, Sherri, whom he loved dearly, of Dayton, Ohio and his three favorite nieces Katie, Courtney and Abby.
Nick was a Vietnam Veterian, a business owner and still involved in event management and production as well as advertising, marketing and public relations through his company, Nickell and Associates. Nick and Kim owned Scrapbooks By The Sea and The Village Sports Shop. He was also the advertising director for The South Carolina Woman Magazine. Nick was employed as the advertising director for several years with The Myrtle Beach Herald. From 1995 to 1998 he was an active performer and consultant on the air show circuit taking part in more than one hundred shows throughout the United States. He has more than twenty-five years experience in news, news management, marketing and special event work, including the Dayton Air Show.
From 1993 to 1995 he was the Director of Sales and Marketing for USATS where he worked with the Trade Show Team as well as designed and implemented research programs, developed and directed the event sponsorship programs, managed group sales, telemarketing ticket program, chalet patrons and premium seating programs. He reported directly to the President/CEO and provided oversight in the areas of media/government/public relations and all advertising.
He also coordinated special programs in the areas of education, economic development and military affairs while staying in touch with the community. His activities with industry associations included the International Council of Airshows, the Air Force Association, The Ohio Travel Association and the International Association of Exposition Management. During this same time, he served as a member of the ICAS Marketing Committee and in addition was a contributing author to the 1996 ICAS publication, Building Marketing Alliances.
His professional career in Dayton included his position as Vice President/Director of Public Relations with Penny/Ohlman/Neiman, Inc., WHIO-TV for more than twelve years in news and news management during which time he earned two Emmy Awards. His responsibilities found him ultimately the Operations Director of television news He was also the liaison between the television station and the air show including being part of the original team that produced the worldwide syndicated television version of the Dayton Air Show. Airplanes were his passion.
He was graduated from Wright State University in 1983 and in 1986 was selected as the first ever, Outstanding communications Alumnus. His continuing education includes twice completing the Air Ground Operations Training at ICAS (1986 and 1994) and the Event Controller Training in 1996.
Nick has served on more than a score of local, regional and national boards during his career and has been honored many times for his contributions to their success. Among the many organizations that he has served are: The Ronald McDonald House and the Ronald McDonald Childrens Charities, Summer Employment Encourages Kids (SEEK), the Beavercreek Community Foundation, CD 96 community celebration of the bicentennial of Montgomery and Greene Counties and the Miami Valley Military Affairs Board of Directors and numerous committees throughout the Pawleys Island, Myrtle Beach area.
Nick touched many lives with his sense of humor and warm personality, never meeting a stranger. He will be missed by his friends and customers.
Nick was a practical guy, so instead of flowers, please make donations to The Pawleys Island Christian Academy, Precious Blood Church in Pawleys Island, The American Legion Post 165 of Miamisburg, Ohio, or to a charity of your choice.
